A pair of students from Karachi and Matiyari are the first differently-abled Pakistanis to be awarded five-year study scholarships at the American School for the Deaf (ASD) in Connecticut, USA, according to Deaf Reach programme.

The students named Usman Ghani and Muhammad Babar were reportedly accepted to the ASD in 2019.

However, their achievement came to light this week when Deaf Reach initiated a crowdfunding campaign to help the duo with their "monthly personal expenses and return ticket for summer break to ensure that they keep learning and sharing their knowledge with students back home".

Ghani hails from Karachi's Landhi area, whereas Babar is from interior Sindh.

Accompanying the funding campaign is a video detailing the two students' life at ASD is Connecticut.

Deaf Reach stated that the two scholars had overcame challenging circumstances to get the scholarship.

"Their goal is to gain the best education possible, and return to serve the Deaf Community in Pakistan," the non-profit said, adding that Usman had three differently-abled siblings studying in Pakistan.

According to Deaf Reach, the goal of the campaign is to fund the expenses of the two students so that they enrich their ASD experience and can later "add value" to the Deaf Reach faculty and teach young students of Pakistan.
