At least two policemen were martyred on Wednesday after unidentified assailants attacked a polio team in Kyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower Dir.According to the police, the incident took place at the Rehnai pull area. The martyred policemen were deployed for the security in the ongoing polio vaccination campaign.Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a crippling childhood disease caused by the polio virus and preventable through immunisation. Affecting mostly children under the age of five, polio — which has no cure and can only be prevented by giving a child multiple vaccine doses — can lead to irreversible paralysis.In the hope of making Pakistan a polio-free country, a countrywide door-to-door anti-polio campaign is underway in all districts/areas of the country from December 16 to December 20 during which 39.6 million children will be targeted.The campaign has been synchronised with Afghanistan to ensure vaccination of all children on the move as well, as 75 of the 104 cases belong to KP that shares a long border with the landlocked country.
